Humans spend the first nine months of their lives immersed in liquid and perceive the outside world through sound vibrations.
Recipients of Musical Hydrotherapy practice have compared their experience to pre-natal life.
In Musical Hydrotherapy, speakers are placed inside the water in a hydrotherapy pool and the listeners are supported to float on the water surface. Buoyant, the listeners feel the sound vibrations on their body and perceive the music when any part of the head is placed in the water. The vibrations travel through the water and stimulate the inner ear directly, and so the listener perceives the sounds as if they are heard from inside their head.
This is an all-body experience of sound that is incredibly detailed and immediate.
Ravensbourne staff were lucky enough to experience this first hand. Several staff were trained and experienced the system as it was installed. The training lasted a full week and took place in our own pool. Staff could not wait to try with their class of students.
Our staff and pupils had the privilege of participating in marvelous training sessions provided by the team at Liquid Listening in the hydro pool. These liquid listening sessions have truly been an oasis of meditative calm, offering a unique blend of floatation and underwater music to support flexibility, mobility, and emotional regulation.
The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. One teacher described the experience as, “my best training ever!” Another noted the transformation in one of our sample group pupils after just two days, calling it “stunning!” Both staff and pupils have thoroughly enjoyed engaging with this innovative system, which has already brought a sense of tranquility and focus to our community.

Underwater speakers are placed inside our hydro-pool, where specially created underwater music is played. Learners are encouraged to submerge their head in the water, allowing the vibrations of the music to travel through the water, directly stimulating the inner ear. This results in a personal and immediate perception of sound. The vibrations are also felt throughout the body, while our trained staff attune to each learner's individual needs, guiding them through either therapeutic movements or allowing them the freedom to move at their own pace.
Learner responses to Liquid Listening include a noticeable increase in calmness, enhanced vocalisation, and the development of trusting relationships with staff. Additionally, learners discover a new way to engage with our hydro pool, not only for physical movement but also for sensory exploration through sound and vibration. These responses contribute to both emotional and physical well-being, creating a truly unique and enriching experience.
